What to Look For in an Assisted Living Facility

When I was looking for a place to help me care for my Shirley, I did a lot of research on assisted living facilities in Knoxville, TN. During my search, I uncovered several fundamentals about looking for this type of place that might be helpful for you. Here are a few things to look for:

Security in Assisted Living

All people value their safety, but, as we grow older we may feel the need to bump up our safety measures, especially if we start to need help. As we rely on others, our sense of control over our own lives and situations tends to dissipate. An assisted living facility that provides a safe, secure environment is crucial. Especially when you’re looking for a spot for a person with dementia, like my Shirley. Additionally, it’s important for the facility to be in a good neighborhood. That reduces the risk of robberies from bad people seeking to take advantage of vulnerable people and it makes it a margin safer if one of our loved ones wanders off.

Wholesome Meals in Assisted Living

As we get older, it gets harder to plan meals. Especially healthy ones!  Why do you think I dine out all that time? When you choose a facility for yourself or a loved one, it’s important to choose one that offers three meals per day that are tasty, healthy and made from good ingredients. It’s even better if there are meal choices for people with dietary restrictions. My Shirley was diabetic, and she was fed diabetes-friendly meals by the chef at her facility. Plus, the facility had a nutritionist on staff, so residents were able to avoid vitamin deficiencies and other problems that affect us as we get over.

Transportation and Activities

My Shirley was too sick to participate in activities in the dining hall or to go on any of the outings provided by the non-assisted living side of the place. However, the assisted living facility provided transportation to and from any doctor or hospital in Knoxville so Shirley could get to her appointments on time. They also worked with our insurance company to make sure transportation was covered. I got to ride with her to appointments, too, which was a great comfort to her.

These are just a few of the things you should consider when choosing an assisted living facility in Knoxville, New York City, or Timbuktu. I have a lot more to tell you, and I’ll tell you what I’ve learned about some of the local facilities in case you or a loved one are considering making the move.
